What things do I need in order to participate in scouting?

To participate, you will need a handbook and uniform. These and other scouting goodies can be purchased at a local scout shop like the Bert Adams Scout Shop, or online at scoutstuff.org. Some of the items that go on the uniform will be awarded or presented to you by the pack (see here).

There is a specific scout handbook for Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos. This means that you buy a new handbook every year except Webelos, who buy that handbook and then use it for two years as a Webelos scout.

Like the handbook, the scout uniform also changes from year to year, and like the handbook, the Webelos scouts wear their uniform for both years as a Webelos. The scout uniforms consist of the following:

Cub Scout Shirt with appropriate emblems (blue shirt for Tiger, Wolf and Bear; tan shirt for Webelos). Short sleeve works better in GA.

Neckerchief, which is different for Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos.

Cub Scout Neckerchief Slide (there are 3 different slides for Tiger, Wolf+Bear, and Webelos)

Cap - Our Pack has custom made caps that you can wear throughout all your cub scout ranks

Blue Cub Scout Belt and Buckle - like the neckerchief slides, the buckles differ for Tiger, Wolf+Bear, and Webelos. The good news is that you buy the buckle separate from the belt and just clip it on.

Pack 410 T-shirt. This is available from our pack for scouts and their family members. It is great to wear on campouts when you don't want to soil your nice shirt.

Other uniform parts, like pants and socks, are available, and can be purchased at your discretion.

The Pack 410 cap and T-shirt, as well as the "410" patch can be purchased at a Pack meeting, but our finances do not allow us to keep a stock of the other items, so you will need to go to a scout shop or order online.

If you buy a slightly large shirt for your Tiger cub, there is a good chance that you will be able to use that blue shirt for three years - until he becomes a Webelos. The Webelos scouts may continue to wear their blue shirt, but most are eager to get the tan shirt, since only Webelos can wear that color and since it's the same shirt worn by Boy Scouts. The shirts are pricey by discount store standards, but the good news is that they are of high quality and seem to last much longer than typical shirts.

What's a Class A or a Class B?

Class A is the cub scout dress uniform. It should be worn at all den and pack meetings and functions. It includes the cap, the shirt with the emblems and patches, the neckerchief and the belt.

Class B is the cub scout casual uniform. It can be worn at camping and other outings or in a pinch if the class A shirt is in the laundry. It's just the blue Pack 410 T-shirt that is available at the pack meetings.

Who or What are Flaming Arrows and Wolverines?

Scout dens are usually numbered. For example Wolf den 5 or Bear den 12. Once the scouts progress to Webelos, however, they are allowed to name their den. They can choose to keep the number or to adopt a name and use a boy scout patrol badge on their shirt where the den number would go.

For example, when Bear den 12 crosses-over to become Webelos scouts, the scouts can decide whether they want to become Webelos den 12, or pick a name and one of the boy scout patrol patches.

For the 2008-2009 scouting year, our Webelos 2 den chose to be the Flaming Arrows den, and the Webelos 1 den chose to be the Wolverine den.
