Emblems and Insignia PDF Print

What emblems and insignia do I need to buy, and which ones will the pack award?

Emblems and insignia are wonderful. They make the scouting uniform colorful and proudly display a scouts recent and major achievements. Unfortunately, they may be a bit confusing for a beginning scout or parent. This section helps you understand what you should buy at the scout shop and what you will earn or be given by the pack.

Where do the emblems and insignia go?

The best resource for where to put your emblems and insignia is the Cub Scout and Webelos Scout Uniform Inspection Checklist. The checklist is a great guide for exactly where and what gets put on the uniform.

Insignia and placement

The insignia and emblems on the scout uniform go in 4 basic areas: left and right sleeves, and left and right pockets. They are also listed on the uniform inspection checklist. Let's go through them one at a time to figure out what you need to buy:

Left Pocket
All the badges of rank, as well as arrow points, arrow of light, medals, knots, and service stars are provided by the pack when they are earned.

You need to purchase the World Crest, which is the blue emblem worn between the top of the left pocket and the shoulder seam.

Right Pocket
All temporary badges (like you may receive from Webelos-ree, scouting for food, or summer camp) will be given to you. Similarly, the Progress Toward Ranks, Webelos Compass emblem and Recruiter strip are presented to you as well.

The shirt comes with a Boy Scouts of America strip above the pocket. Tiger cubs need to purchase the Tiger Cubs strip that goes directly below the right pocket.

Left Sleeve
You need to purchase the left sleeve. The emblems and insignia you need are: the Atlanta Area Council patch; the Veteran unit insignia - (Pack 410 wears a 30-year insignia!); and the Pack Numeral patch(es).

The Pack Numeral [410] can be purchased anywhere as individual digits, or you can purchase a 3-digit custom 410 patch at a pack meeting. It is easier to attach, easier to line-up, and cheaper too.

Right Sleeve
The Quality Unit patch will be provided by the pack. We have earned the Quality Unit patch consistently, year-after-year. Webelos Scouts will also be given the Webelos colors when they cross-over or join, as well as the activity pins as they are earned.

You need to purchase the American Flag and the Den Numeral or Emblem. Webelos scouts wear Den Emblems and the other scouts wear a Den Numeral. Ask your den leader which one to use for the 2007-2008 scouting year.

Why buy a belt if I don't have to buy the shorts or trousers?

The answer, of course, is belt loops!

Scouts earn belt loops for various academic and athletic achievements. Belt loops are relatively easy to earn. For example, if you attended the fishing derby or bicycle rodeo, then you almost certainly earned a belt loop. Similarly, if you are involved in a sport program during this scouting year, you almost certainly have earned a belt loop for that sport. See the General section of the Scout Resources page for more information about belt loops
